Rob PrinceI acquired a love of working with wood from a very early age through my father, who was a keen wood carver. I learned to use a lathe at school, and from school went on to become a cabinet maker, whilst continuing with my wood turning at home in my spare time. Later in life I trained as a tree surgeon, and also did timber milling for a time, which allowed me to pick out some wonderfully shaped pieces to work with.
I most enjoy creating forms from unusual shaped wood straight from the tree, working it ‘wet’, and allowing the shape to develop organically as I get further into the wood. This often results in the finished project being nothing like the original idea, and developing its shape from the internal grain and texture of the wood.
